Tips for Twirling a Flaming Baton

You’ve more than likely seen baton twirling during a football half-time show, a parade, or in a marching band. It’s fun to practice and it’s especially fun to watch. If you’re a baton twirler and want to bring you’re your skill to the next level, a challenging and unique skill to learn is how to twirl a flaming baton. When done properly, it is a magnificent show and an all-around crowd pleaser. But how is it done?

Requiring at least a level of intermediacy, fire baton twirlers should have a good awareness of safety and handling while performing tricks with the baton. While twirling, you’ll always want to keep the baton moving, and if you do stop, make sure the baton is in a horizontal position so the fire doesn’t crawl up the baton to your arm.

Make sure when you’re tossing or twirling the baton that you keep focus on handling the middle of the baton. The ends are hot of course, so keep your hand from reaching the ends. Before you begin twirling fire batons, practice with your baton unlit so you get a feel for the weight and movement of your baton. Practice is the key to making sure you don’t have any mishaps while performing.

When twirling a fire baton, you should always have someone with you, for safety purposes. Having a spotter can also be advantageous to help extinguish the baton during your performance, or after. Additionally, you can purchase a metal fire baton case to safely extinguish and store your baton.
