Baton twirling involves throwing around props and sometimes even playing with fire. This means safety needs to be a top priority. While some injuries are bound to occur in any sport, there are always steps you can take to make them less prevalent. Here are some of the most common issues that happen in baton twirling and how they can be prevented. Setting Up for Safety One of the most important ways to stay safe as a baton twirler is by using the correct size baton. Measure the baton by putting one end of the baton under the arm and making sure the other end fits in the palm. Next, make sure you’re practicing in a safe place. How Title IX Changed Baton Twirling

History has not always been kind to girls, but baton twirling started out as a rare female-dominated sport. Thought of as a sideshow during male-dominated sports games, twirling was one of the only ways girls could participate in athletics. This was until Congress passed Title IX in 1972, allowing girls to join school sports teams. Twirling in the Past Baton twirling started out as a more feminine pursuit that the general public perceived as entertainment for the male athletes who played serious sports. The two options for girls who wanted to get on the field were cheerleading and baton twirling, where they stood on the sidelines. It wasn’t all bad for girls and women who participated.
