There are certain basic twirls that every baton twirler should be familiar with, whether you are a beginner or an advanced twirler. The Figure 8 (both horizontal and vertical) is a basic baton twirling trick that many more advanced twirling tricks build from. Below is an easy-to-understand description of how to execute these twirls:

Horizontal Figure 8

First, hold the baton vertical in your hand in the middle of the baton. Then, use your wrist to make the baton's head draw a large horizontal circle counter-clockwise in front of your body. The small tip of your baton will automatically also create a counter-clockwise circle. Practice slowly at first, getting accustomed to the feel of the baton in your hand. Give it room to move in the crook between your thumb and forefinger as it circles around, but don't hold it so loosely that it falls from your hand. Speed up the motion as it becomes more comfortable to you and be sure to practice with both hands. No matter which hand you hold the baton in, you will always be making a counter-clockwise circle.

Start this twirling trick also holding your baton vertical in the middle with one hand and your thumb facing up. The movement for this twirl also comes from your wrist. The first loop of the "8" will be a clockwise circle and the second loop will be a counter-clockwise circle. The movement seems kind of like your are scooping ice cream cones on both sides of your body. They'll flow into each other as you get used to the motion. Practice this movement slowly, increasing speed as you become more comfortable with it. As you continue practicing, vary your speed, arm positions, and which hand is holding the baton.
